Ingredients

Cereal base
  • 9 cup rice or corn cereal squares
Chocolate coating
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 0.5 cup peanut butter
  • 0.25 cup butter
Sweet coating
  • 1.5 cup powdered sugar
Halloween mix-in
  • 1 Halloween candy, for mixing Use colorful Halloween candies or sprinkles.

Equipment

  • 1 microwave-safe bowl

Method

Melt the coating
  1. Melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter together until smooth, using short microwave bursts or gentle heat, then cool for 2 minutes so it pours easily.
  2. Pour the warm chocolate mixture over the cereal squares in a large bowl and stir until every square is evenly glossy-coated.
Dust and shake
  1. Transfer the coated cereal to a sealable bag and add the powdered sugar.
  2. Shake the bag vigorously for 20-30 seconds until the cereal is fully dusted and looks cocoa-colored with a white sugar coating.
Finish with candy
  1. Pour the puppy chow into a serving bowl, then mix in the Halloween candy until evenly distributed.

Notes

Let the chocolate mixture cool slightly (about 2 minutes) before pouring so it coats thickly instead of pooling. Store airtight at room temperature up to 3 days; for best crunch, avoid refrigerating. Freezing is not recommended as the powdered sugar can soften. For a dairy-light swap, use dairy-free chocolate chips and a plant-based butter substitute to keep the same texture.
